All out for marriage equality! - Community rally set for March 27, as Supreme Court hears DOMA case

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Supporters of marriage equality will gather at the Federal Courthouse in Seattle on the day the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments in two historic cases that examine whether Gay and Lesbian Americans should have the same opportunities as everyone else.

The rally scheduled for Wednesday, March 27, is part of the United for Marriage: Light the Way to Justice coalition, a group of LGBT and allied organizations rallying in Washington, D.C., and in communities across the country to show the broad support for marriage equality.

Local social justice nonprofit Social Outreach Seattle (SOSea), Pride at Work, The Seattle Lesbian, Seattle Gay News, and local activist Marley Blonsky are the event organizers.

The Marriage Equality USA rally will demonstrate the broad support for marriage equality in the Seattle area. Featured speakers include representatives of SOSea, Pride Foundation, Equal Rights Washington, The Seattle Lesbian, and local couples whose lives have been affected by the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

FEDERAL EQUALITY THE GOAL
"Even though we have the freedom to marry in Washington State, married gay and lesbian couples still lack full federal equality. This rally is a chance to show the nation that we are ready for full marriage equality," said Blonsky, lead organizer of the rally.

Support for marriage equality across all demographics is at an all-time high. According to a March 2013 ABC News poll, 58 percent of Americans support allowing same-sex couples to marry. And a recent poll by Grove Insight found that 75 percent of Americans - including 56 percent of Republicans - view the freedom to marry the person you love as a constitutional right.

The Supreme Court will devote one day each to cases challenging California's Prop 8 (Hollingsworth v. Perry, March 26) and the federal Defense of Marriage Act (United States v. Windsor, March 27).

Wednesday's rally will begin at noon and last one hour at the Federal Courthouse, 700 Stewart St. in downtown Seattle. Get involved before the rally on Facebook.
