Dina Martina proves she has Ample Wattage at Re-Bar

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Dina Martina:
Ample Wattage!
Re-Bar
Through April 22

My love affair with Dina Martina - the sidesplitting comedian who horribly sings her way into the hearts of fans from Seattle to Provincetown - began three years ago when I saw her perform a mixed bag of her, dare I say, 'greatest hits.' Within minutes of her trouncing onstage (bad makeup and camel toe for all the world to see), I was hooked.

And I know you're the same - it's OK, you can admit it; you're addicted just like me. We need our Dina Martina fix. Well, my fellow sufferer, she's back, and more terrifyingly funny than ever. From now until April 22 at Re-Bar (1114 Howell St.), or 'Re-Bar's Place,' as Dina calls it, Dina Martina is going to give you Ample Wattage!

I went with a group of friends to catch Dina Martina: Ample Wattage! on opening night, March 9. You never quite know what you're in for. I mean, you know that Dina will be wearing a new, ridiculous, ill-fitting wig and costume. You know that the fabulous Chris Jeffries - who neither talks nor smiles during the duration of the show - acts as Dina's accompanist. And you know you will laugh until you pee and your stomach muscles ache. But - and this is probably due to the misleading and odd posters that Dina peppers the Hill with - you're never really sure exactly how she will have you in stitches. And make no mistake, she will. This is the genius of Dina Martina, because no matter how many times you've seen a Dina show, you're excited to be there and can't wait to see what she has in store for you.

Ample Wattage! delivers. From beginning to end, the show is jam-packed with comedy that ranges from intellectual to toilet humor. Dina likes to keep current, often weaving in local current events into her routine. This time around, Dina tackles such topics as marriage equality and the 'It Gets Better' project.

Dina Martina has also come to town armed with some new videos! If you've ever been to a Dina show and have had the pleasure to see old video clips - from movies to commercials - with Dina superimposed into them and a voiceover that's just plain ridiculous, then you know how exciting this is! This year's all-new video segment highlight is a movie trailer for an upcoming Western movie starring Dina! Who needs Clint Eastwood and John Wayne when you've got Dina on the screen?

It almost seems absurd to talk about Dina's musical selections in any real way, but with Ample Wattage!, Dina has selected some of the most varied songs she's ever put together in one show. From Neil Diamond to Deep Blue Something, Dina takes the audience on a joyride through decades of hits - in only the way she can.

Remember to bring a Dina virgin to the show. No, really - it's amazing. I love bringing a friend along to watch them as they try their damnedest to figure out what the hell is going on. Then, slowly but surely, just as I did, they get it. Dina is just plain fun, and in a world and time where everyone seems a bit too somber, she is answer to your comedic desires.

Be warned: Dina shows do sell out, so order your tickets online at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/218811 early. Re-Bar does not accept credit cards at the bar, so bring cash. Doors open at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m. Matinees begin at 2 p.m., doors at 1 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
