The gore in the original film deterred a friend from seeing 'Underworld', but , as well as watching sweet 'n sexy Kate Beckinsale run around in that leather cat-suit as the vampire heroine, 'Selene'. So, of course I was delighted to be sitting in the theater last week, beside my friend and illustrator (he's the one who did that cool drawing I hope you're all enjoying in Lipstick and Lust's serial story, 'Prayerland'), Omar, witnessing more carnage and more shots of the lovely Ms. Beckinsale in her warrior best.

The sequel to the much loved 'Underworld,' 'Underworld: Evolution,' gives more of the back story of how the two clans - vampire and werewolf (lycans) - came to be enemies, thus launching a centuries long battle. And though this part (in my humble opinion) needed a little more explanation, and, probably a second look, the battle scenes between early 'death dealers' (vampires) and werewolves (lycans) are damned impressive. Gory, but impressive nonetheless. I don't think my other friend wants to see this one either.

And as Selene (Beckinsale, looking tasty in a particularly passionate love scene with co-star, Michael Speedman) and Michael (the lycan/vampire hybrid from the 'Underworld') fight their way through one close call after another, they come closer to the truth about the war between the clans. Oh, she also finds out she's the key to the whole schmear, and that her blood is more important than she ever imagined, which comes to help her and Michael win this round of the battle royale.

A shiver your timbers, kick out the jams horror-fest, 'Underworld: Evolution rocks hard, and should become a classic among lovers of the genre, but, believe me, this is certainly not for the faint of heart. Also, a plus in this one are those to die for costumes, which both Omar and I agreed will undoubtedly be showing up at upcoming sci-fi/fantasy cons real soon.
